Name: Rodney Hurd - Director

Pet name and why? – Bubba as I was a mummy’s boy!

What led you to work with young people?
All through school I had a secret that I needed to tell a teacher and I could not find one teacher that I trusted enough to tell.  No-one dug deep enough to find out what was bugging me.  No-one looked behind my behaviour to see my need.  For a long while I went off the rails until at the age of 19 I became involved with the church, which acted kind of like the father that left me when I was aged 2.  It challenged me and instead of running from my fears, I gradually started to challenge them and help others challenge them, which led me to become a local/district/regional/national young people vice president and from there through the YMCA became involved in working with young people.  I see it more than a career, I see it as a passion to help young people to develop strategies to Reach Challenge and Empower.

Your thoughts on 4’rce Training and their style and approach of working with young people.

As in our Mission Statement, 4’rce strive to identify and understand the barriers that prevent young people from reaching their full potential.  4’rce design and create methods and strategies that stimulate and encourage young people and that are effective, by equipping them to overcome those barriers.

Your thoughts on 4’rce Training and their style and approach of working with young people.
After working for other organizations within the ‘field’ we could see a great gap and inflexibility in the provision that was offered to  yp.  We set about creating an organization that was able to meet the young people on their level using our skills, flexibility and innovation to offer them a more all round supportive service

What led you to work with young people?
Years ago I worked at a place where I was constantly clock watching. I wanted to work in an environment that I enjoyed and would actually look forward to going to work.  Working around young people is never dull and it is heartening to see any young person turn their life around

Your thoughts on 4’rce Training and their style and approach of working with young people.
I did admin on various projects at Connexions for 5 years; projects for young people who need additional support to achieve their full potential; young people who need a chance in life. 4’rce delivered programmes on many of those projects and with successes where others had failed.  I was impressed with their style of working with young people and how they managed to engage with young people; young people who were extremely difficult to engage with.  They care about the young people they work with and have a unique approach to their work.
